We’re Superpower Electric — a family-owned electrical contractor based in Red Bank, about 15 minutes from Matawan via Route 34. NJ License #12849. Over 900 five-star reviews. We’ve been working on Matawan homes and businesses since 1996.
Matawan is one of the most historically layered towns in Monmouth County — the Main Street corridor has homes and buildings dating back to the 1700s and 1800s, while the neighborhoods radiating outward are dominated by post-war construction from the 1940s through 1960s. That means two-thirds of the borough’s housing stock is 60–80+ years old, running on electrical systems that were designed for a completely different era. Panel upgrades, rewiring, and modernization work keep us coming back to Matawan regularly.
We’re not a big franchise and we’re not based an hour away. Our Red Bank office puts us 15 minutes from Matawan — close enough for same-day service and fast emergency response.
✓ 15-minute drive — straight down Route 34
✓ No travel surcharges — Matawan is within our core Monmouth County service zone
✓ Technicians who know this town — the housing eras, the wiring issues, the common problems
✓ 24/7 emergency service — including storm response
We’ve upgraded panels on Main Street, rewired pre-war homes near Ravine Drive, installed generators in Marc Woods and Strathmore, and put EV chargers in driveways across the borough. Matawan is a regular service area for our crews.
Licensed. Insured. Local.
Sixty-seven percent of Matawan's homes were built between 1940 and 1969. Almost universally, these homes have 100-amp panels — many with original breakers — that were designed for a few ceiling lights, a refrigerator, and maybe a window AC unit. They were never built to handle central air, multiple flat-screens, home offices with dual monitors, EV chargers, or kitchens with induction cooktops and double ovens.
We upgrade to 200-amp service, which gives Matawan homeowners the capacity to run modern electrical loads safely, add an EV charger, install a generator, and renovate without hitting a wall. For larger homes or additions, we install sub-panels to distribute loads properly.
A panel upgrade is also typically required before adding an EV charger, generator, or hot tub circuit — so if any of those are on your list, the panel is where we start.
Matawan's housing stock spans multiple wiring eras, each with its own set of problems:
Pre-war homes (Main Street corridor, Ravine Drive area) — Some of the borough's oldest homes still have knob-and-tube wiring or cloth-wrapped conductors. These are fire hazards. No grounding, deteriorated insulation, and circuits that can't handle modern loads. We do full and partial rewires with minimal wall disruption.
Post-war ranches and capes (1940s–1960s) — The bulk of Matawan's housing. Common issues include undersized circuits, ungrounded two-prong outlets, and in some late-1960s/early-1970s homes, aluminum branch wiring — which creates fire risk at every connection point due to oxidation and thermal expansion.
1970s–1990s homes (Green and White Village, The Preserve, newer sections) — Generally in better shape, but many still have 100-amp panels that can't support today's demands. May also have Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels — known defective brands that should be replaced.
Insurance companies are increasingly flagging legacy wiring during renewals and real estate transactions. If yours has been flagged, call us for an inspection and options.
Most repair calls in Matawan come from the same source: a home built between 1945 and 1969 with its original electrical system still doing the heavy lifting. That 67% of Matawan's housing stock shows up in our repair log constantly — breakers that won't hold, outlets that spark or go dead, light fixtures that flicker on shared circuits, and the occasional Federal Pacific panel that fails to trip when it should (a genuine safety hazard we see more often here than in neighboring towns).
We troubleshoot and repair electrical issues in every Matawan neighborhood — from the historic homes along Main Street to the split-levels in Marc Woods and the mixed-era construction in Strathmore and Green Village. When a repair is the right answer, we make the repair. When the underlying system is the problem, we tell you that too.
Matawan sits in one of Monmouth County's most outage-prone corridors. The Matawan-Aberdeen-Old Bridge area gets hammered during summer thunderstorms and nor'easters — JCP&L outages in this area regularly make the news, with thousands of customers losing power for days at a time. The June 2025 storms alone knocked out power to thousands of Matawan and Aberdeen homes when a bow echo produced near-70 mph winds.
A standby generator provides:
We install Generac, Kohler, and Briggs & Stratton generators. We handle the full process — load calculation, unit sizing, gas line coordination, concrete pad, automatic transfer switch, permitting, and final inspection. Most Matawan homes need a 16–22kW unit depending on what you want to back up.
Matawan is a commuter town — the Aberdeen-Matawan station is the busiest on the North Jersey Coast Line, with roughly 2,500 daily boardings. Many of those commuters are switching to EVs, and a Level 2 home charger means waking up to a full battery instead of hunting for a public charger.
We handle Level 2 home charger installations for Tesla Wall Connectors, ChargePoint Home Flex, and all other makes. The reality for most Matawan homes: your 100-amp panel doesn't have 40–50 amps to spare for a charger. A panel upgrade is almost always the first step. We do both — panel upgrade and charger installation — typically in a single visit.
Whole-House Surge Protection — Panel-mounted protection for electronics, appliances, and HVAC systems. Especially important in Matawan given the frequency of storm-related power fluctuations and grid surges from JCP&L.
Indoor & Outdoor Lighting — Recessed lighting for kitchen and basement renovations, driveway and walkway lighting, security lighting, and landscape lighting for the larger lots in Marc Woods and the western sections.
Electrical Inspections — Pre-sale and pre-purchase inspections that go beyond a standard home inspection. Matawan's older housing stock means buyers and sellers both benefit from a thorough electrical assessment before closing.
Matawan's Main Street has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972. The architectural variety is remarkable — Greek Revival, Queen Anne, Italianate, Victorian Gothic, Federal, Colonial, and Georgian homes dating from the 1700s through the early 1900s. Behind those facades, the electrical systems range from "updated at some point" to "original and dangerous." Knob-and-tube wiring, ancient fuse boxes, 30-60 amp service, and ungrounded circuits are common in this section. These homes need careful rewiring that respects the historic character while bringing the electrical system into the 21st century.
The largest category of housing in Matawan. Ranches, capes, and split-levels on quarter-acre lots throughout the borough's interior. These homes were built with 100-amp panels and 8-10 circuits — designed for a time before central air, multiple TVs, home offices, and EV chargers. Panel upgrades and circuit additions are the bread-and-butter work we do in these neighborhoods.
A desirable neighborhood of approximately 167 homes on 111 acres, built from the 1960s onward. Primarily ranch and split-level single-family homes on half-acre lots. Many have been significantly upgraded, but the electrical panels often haven't kept pace with the renovations. We frequently do panel upgrades and EV charger installations in Marc Woods.
Established neighborhoods with homes built from the 1940s through the 1990s. Mixed housing stock — single-family homes and some apartment/condo complexes. The older homes share the same 100-amp panel and aging wiring issues as the rest of the post-war stock. The newer sections (1970s–1990s) may have 150 or 200-amp panels but could still have defective panel brands (Federal Pacific, Zinsco) that need replacement.

We’re based in Red Bank — about 15 minutes via Route 34. For emergencies, we can typically arrive within 30–45 minutes.
Yes. Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels have a well-documented history of breakers failing to trip during overloads, which is a fire hazard. We replace these with modern Square D or Siemens panels. If you’re unsure whether you have an FPE panel, we can inspect it.
In most Matawan homes built before the 1980s, yes. A Level 2 EV charger needs a dedicated 40–50 amp, 240V circuit, and most 100-amp panels don’t have that capacity to spare. We handle both the panel upgrade and charger installation, typically in one visit.
It depends on what you want to back up. A typical Matawan ranch or colonial running whole-house backup — HVAC, refrigerator, sump pump, lighting, home office — usually needs a 16–22kW standby generator. We do a detailed load calculation to size it correctly.
