Asbury Park is a city of Victorian homes, coastal storms, and constant renovation. The 1890s housing boom left behind Queen Anne and Victorian cottages with turrets, bay windows, and gingerbread trim — and wiring systems that haven’t been touched in over a century. Knob-and-tube is common here. So are 60-amp fuse boxes, ungrounded outlets, and cloth-wrapped wire that insurance companies won’t cover.
At the same time, Asbury Park is changing fast. Cookman Avenue has gone from vacant storefronts to packed restaurants and boutiques. The waterfront has new hotels and condos. Homeowners are renovating properties in the Northeast section, the Northwest near Sunset Lake, and increasingly on the West Side along Springwood Avenue. Every renovation reveals the same thing: electrical systems that can’t support modern life.
We’ve worked in Asbury Park since 1996 — back when this was a very different town. We know these houses. We know what’s behind the plaster. And we’re about 15 minutes from the boardwalk.
Residential and commercial electrician work throughout Asbury Park, from troubleshooting to full-house renovations.
Asbury Park's electrical repair calls split into two distinct categories. The first: century-old Victorians and rowhomes on the west side with original knob-and-tube, porcelain fixtures, and fuse boxes that blow when someone runs a hair dryer and a microwave at the same time. The second: renovated condos and new construction along the waterfront where modern systems occasionally throw problems — GFCI outlets tripping in salt-air environments, smart switches losing connectivity, LED dimmers buzzing on incompatible fixtures.
Whether it's a brownout in a Cookman Avenue apartment or a dead circuit in a bungalow off Sunset Avenue, we diagnose fast and fix right. No guesswork. No unnecessary upselling. If the repair uncovers something bigger — corroded wiring, a failing panel — we explain what we're seeing before recommending next steps.
Most Asbury Park Victorians still have 60-amp or 100-amp panels — far short of what modern homes require. We upgrade to 200-amp service, often as part of a renovation or to satisfy insurance requirements.
Asbury Park's proximity to the Atlantic makes it vulnerable to coastal storms, nor'easters, and extended outages. When the power goes out, a standby generator kicks on automatically.
Level 2 charging for Tesla, Ford, Rivian, and all other EVs. Older homes typically need a panel evaluation first — there may not be capacity without an upgrade. See our Asbury Park EV Station installations
Salt air, aging wiring, and coastal storms are a bad combination for electronics. Surge protection at the panel guards against damage to appliances and equipment.
Knob-and-tube removal and whole-house rewiring for homes built before 1940. We fish new wires through walls to minimize plaster damage — critical in historic homes where you want to preserve the character.

Most homes in Asbury Park were built between 1890 and 1940. That’s the era of knob-and-tube wiring, which was standard then but is now considered a fire risk by most insurance companies. Many carriers won’t write policies for homes with active K&T — or they’ll require removal before issuing coverage.
Beyond wiring, the panels in these homes are often undersized. A 60-amp service was fine when homes had a few lights and a radio. It doesn’t work when you’re running central air, a modern kitchen, home office equipment, and thinking about an EV charger. Renovating a Victorian in Asbury Park almost always means upgrading the electrical — not because you want to, but because you have to.
Add the coastal storm exposure — nor’easters, hurricane remnants, and the kind of sustained wind events that knock out power for days — and Asbury Park homeowners have a lot to think about electrically.
