10 Most Common Electrical Repairs In Homes

After nearly three decades of electrical repair service calls across thousands of homes here in Monmouth County, most electrical problems we see fall into the same short list. The materials change, the brands change, the code changes, but all the failure points stay remarkably consistent. A breaker that won’t stay set. An outlet that runs warm to the touch. Lights that dim every time the refrigerator kicks on.

 

Each of these has a real cause behind it, and most of them are warning you before they become dangerous. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation home electrical fires account for an estimated 51,000 fires each year in the United States, resulting in nearly 500 deaths and more than $1.3 billion in property damage. The majority of those fires trace back to issues that started small and got ignored.

 

So now that we know these issues are clearly serious, here are the ten electrical repairs we make most often, what’s actually happening behind the wall, and how to tell when it’s time to stop resetting the breaker and call a licensed electrician.

Flickering or Dimming Lights

Most homeowners assume that a flickering light is a bad bulb and while sometimes it is. More often, it isn’t.

The three causes we see again and again during this repair call:

A loose connection somewhere on the circuit: A backstabbed receptacle upstream of the light, a loose wire nut in a junction box, or a worn screw terminal at the switch. Loose connections arc, heat up, and eventually fail. They are the single most common starting point for electrical fires inside a wall.
A large appliance sharing the circuit: If your lights dim every time the HVAC, microwave, or refrigerator cycles on, the circuit is being momentarily overloaded. That’s not an immediate emergency, but it tells you the original wiring plan no longer matches how the home is used.
A loose neutral at the electrical panel or meter: This one is more serious. A loose neutral causes voltage to swing across the home, which can damage electronics and, in rare cases, start a fire at the panel. If lights flicker in unrelated rooms at the same time, get a licensed electrician out.

Circuit Breakers That Keep Tripping

A breaker is doing exactly what it was designed to do when it trips. The real question is why it’s tripping in the first place.

Usually its because of one of three things.
 
Overloaded circuit: Too many devices pulling power on the same circuit. Common in older homes where one 15-amp circuit may serve an entire bedroom, hallway, and half of the kitchen.
Short circuit: A hot wire touching a neutral or ground somewhere on the line. Usually inside a device, an outlet, or a damaged section of cable.
Worn breaker: Breakers are mechanical devices. After about 25 to 30 years they lose sensitivity and start tripping for no clear reason, or worse, fail to trip when they should.

If you’re resetting the same breaker more than a couple of times a month, stop. That breaker is protecting the wiring inside your walls from overheating. A proper diagnosis, whether through a circuit breaker installation and repair call or a broader electrical inspection, ours takes about an hour and tells you exactly which of the three you’re dealing with if you are in Central New Jersey.

Warm Or Discolored Outlets

An outlet should never be warm, not after running a vacuum, not after charging a laptop, not ever and if it is, that’s a big problem.

A warm outlet means current is meeting resistance somewhere it shouldn’t, usually at a loose connection inside the device. The plastic discoloration around the slots, that faint brown halo, is the visible record of repeated heating events. Inside the box, the wires often show melted insulation and pitted copper.

We replace these outlets every week. The repair is straightforward. The risk of leaving it alone is not. Per the Consumer Product Safety Commission, overheated outlets and damaged receptacles are a leading source of in-wall ignition and as it happens, may is Electrical Safety Month!

So if an outlet is warm, unplug anything connected to it, stop using it, and schedule a outlet repair or replacement with a local company. 

A Burning Or Fishy Smell Near An Outlet, Switch, Or Panel

A burning plastic smell or a faint fish-like odor near electrical equipment is one of the few electrical signals that requires immediate action. Modern outlet, switch, and breaker components are made from flame-retardant plastics that release a distinctive fishy odor when they overheat. That smell is the material warning you.

If you ever smell it:
1. Stop using devices on that circuit.
2. Shut the corresponding breaker off at the panel.
3. Call a licensed electrician the same day.

We’ve opened plenty of outlet boxes where the receptacle itself looked fine from the cover plate but was charred black on the back. The smell is almost always the only warning a homeowner gets before something fails outright.

Dead Outlets

When an outlet suddenly stops working usually its not the end of the world but it should be addressed and more often than not its one of the reasons below:

– A tripped GFCI elsewhere on the circuit. One GFCI receptacle often protects several downstream outlets. If a bathroom or kitchen GFCI trips, outlets in the garage, on the porch, or in another bathroom may go dead with it.
– A tripped breaker at the panel.
– A failed receptacle. Backstabbed outlets, the kind installed by pushing wires into spring clips on the back rather than wrapping them around the screws, are responsible for a huge share of these failures. The spring tension weakens over time, the connection loosens, the outlet fails.
– A loose wire in a junction box upstream of the dead outlet.

A dead outlet is usually a simple repair. The real reason to get it diagnosed quickly is that the same loose connection causing the dead outlet may be heating up the box at the same time.

Loose, Crackling Or Sparking Switches

Now a small spark when you flip a switch on a high-load circuit, like an air handler or a microwave, CAN be normal. A switch that crackles when you toggle it, feels loose in the wall, or shows visible scorching is not and needs to be inspected.

When you look inside that switch, the contacts that complete the circuit are eroding. Every actuation creates a tiny arc, and over thousands of cycles those arcs wear away the metal. Once enough damage has accumulated, the switch starts to fail in ways that can heat the box and surrounding wiring.

GFCI Outlets That Won't Reset

GFCI outlets protect against ground faults, the kind of shock you’d get if a hair dryer fell into a sink. AFCI breakers protect against arc faults, the kind of in-wall sparking that starts fires. Modern code requires both throughout most of the home.

When one trips and won’t reset, the cause is usually one of three things:

A genuine fault on the circuit: Something downstream is leaking current. The GFCI is doing its job.
A worn device: GFCIs have a limited lifespan, typically 10 to 15 years. The internal sensor degrades and starts tripping on its own or refuses to reset.
Miswired protection: GFCIs have a line side and a load side. Reverse them during installation and the device may seem to work but will not actually trip during a fault.

If pressing reset does nothing and the breaker for that circuit is set, the outlet itself usually needs to be replaced. Don’t bypass it, and don’t ignore it. The protection it provides is the reason it’s required.

Two-Pronged Outlets

Here in Monmouth County at least, plenty of older homes still have two-prong outlets in living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms. They functioned fine for decades, but they have a real limitation due to no ground path.
Without a ground, a fault inside any plugged-in device has nowhere safe to dissipate. Power strips with surge protection don’t actually protect anything when plugged into an ungrounded outlet, because the surge protection circuit relies on the ground to shunt energy away from your equipment. So even if the label says “protected.” It isn’t and there are two correct ways to address this:

 

1. Run a new grounded circuit: This is the right answer for outlets you regularly use with modern electronics.
2. Install a GFCI receptacle and label it “No Equipment Ground”: The NEC allows this as a code-compliant alternative. It provides shock protection but not equipment surge protection.

 

For those looking for a whole-home solution, you can combine grounded outlets where possible with whole-house surge protection at the panel. That way the protection lives at the service entrance instead of relying on individual plug strips.

Loose Aluminum Wiring Connections

Many homes built between roughly 1965 and 1973 were often wired with solid aluminum branch circuit wiring. The problem is aluminum expands and contracts more than copper, and when terminated at standard receptacles and switches, those connections loosen over time. Loose aluminum connections are a documented fire risk and one of the few wiring issues the CPSC specifically warns homeowners about.

The fix isn’t always full rewiring and you can do some repairs, namely:

– COPALUM crimps. A specialized crimp connector that bonds a short copper pigtail to the aluminum conductor. Considered the gold standard.
– AlumiConn connectors. A listed alternative using set-screw terminals designed for aluminum to copper transitions.

Obsolete or Recalled Electrical Panels

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home and when it fails, nothing else in the home is safe or working.
 
The two panel brands we often get called out to replace are Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels, and Zinsco panels.
 
Both panel types are widely considered unsafe, and many home insurers now refuse to write or renew policies on homes that still have them. If you’ve seen the names “Stab-Lok,” “Federal Pacific,” “Zinsco,” or “Sylvania” on the inside of your panel door, plan for Federal Pacific and Zinsco panel replacement.

Beyond the recalled brands, any panel approaching 30 to 40 years old is a candidate for replacement, especially if the home has added central air, an EV charger, a hot tub, or a kitchen remodel since the panel was installed. An electrical panel upgrade is a one-time investment that addresses dozens of downstream problems at once.

When Is It Time To Call An Electrician?

A useful rule of thumb. If the problem involves any of the following, it’s time to stop troubleshooting and bring in a licensed pro:

– Heat at any device (outlet, switch, breaker, panel)
– Burning smells
– Repeated breaker trips on the same circuit
– Sparks beyond the small flash of a switch on a high-load circuit
– Discoloration around outlets or switches
– Flickering across multiple rooms simultaneously
– Any work involving the service panel, the meter, or the main feeders

For everything else, a diagnostic visit is inexpensive insurance. A licensed electrician can identify the actual cause in a single trip, where homeowner troubleshooting often replaces a symptom (the outlet, the bulb) without addressing the underlying issue (the loose connection upstream).
